“When you acknowledge your hearing loss and seek professional advice and support you’ll be given guidance to improve your communication and mitigate the effects of any hearing loss.”

Steven McCluskey, Audiologist Apex Hearing

Many people suspect they have trouble hearing yet do nothing about it. Are you one of them?

Do you sometimes hear that someone is talking to you but don’t quite understand what they’re saying? Is it difficult for you to hear in places where there is background noise? Are others always telling you that the television is too loud? Do you find that you have to see a person’s face to be able to understand them properly?  Do you find it exhausting to communicate for any length of time?

If any of these apply to you then you may be experiencing hearing loss. If you are then it’s not a good idea to leave it untreated as it can have an increasingly detrimental effect on your life, your relationships and your health.

If you are not convinced already here are some reasons why you should not put off seeking help:

• Hearing loss can affect your relationships and your social life if left untreated. When you acknowledge your hearing loss and seek professional advice and support you’ll be given guidance to improve your communication and mitigate the effects of any hearing loss

• Hearing loss can be associated with a number of serious health conditions such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease. There is also a link with a higher risk of falls. If you get your hearing checked out you’ll be taking the first step to better health

• Even those with mild hearing loss are at a greater risk of developing dementia, with the risk increasing in line with increased levels of hearing loss. Wearing a hearing aid has been shown to help alleviate this risk

• If you know about your hearing loss then you can take advantage of systems like hearing loops which are now set up in many public buildings

Most people who have lived with untreated hearing loss for years express regret that they didn’t get it treated sooner. They comment that if they had known how much it would have changed their life for the better they would definitely have sought help sooner.
