Hearing tests are just as important as Dental and Eye Test appointments so we recommend annual hearing tests to keep your hearing in check. If there are any sudden changes to your hearing or you experience hearing loss, a hearing test is strongly advised as soon as possible.
As we age, it is natural for us to experience some hearing loss. Of course age related hearing loss affects everyone differently, but in general, our inner ear has many hair cells and as we age, these hair cells begin to die. Hearing Loss becomes more pronounced as more hair cells die.
Hearing Loss can be divided into two main forms: Sensorineural Hearing Loss and Conductive Hearing Loss. The root cause of Sensorineural Hearing Loss lies in the inner ear. It is most commonly associated with  presbycusis and stems from the natural ageing process of the auditory system. There can however be other factors involved. Presycusis or Age-related hearing loss can sometimes be hereditary, or it may be as a result of environmental factors such as over exposure to loud noises over a prolonged period of time. Conductive Hearing Loss occurs when there is a blockage, obstruction or damage to the outer or middle ear which prevents sound waves from travelling through to the inner ear and ear drum. This condition can either be temporary or permanent.
As you begin to age, you may notice that your sense of hearing has somewhat diminished. As soon as you experience this, you should make an appointment for a hearing test so that the audiologist can assess your hearing and provide you with any solutions to your age-related hearing loss. This is very common and natural and there is great support and help available. The sooner the diagnosis, the more that can be done so regular hearing tests are vitally important.
While Presbycusis can not be reversed, there are options available which will provide huge assistance to people suffering from age-related hearing loss. Hearing aid technology has improved considerably over the years and for those who worry about their appearance, be assured that hearing aids are now not only fashionable and sleek, but come in a range of styles to suit every budget.
